Galloway Cattle inducted into the Slow Food Ark of Taste

GALLOWAYS AUSTRALIA is privileged to announce the induction of the Galloway cattle breed into the Slow Food Ark of Taste.

For centuries, Galloway cattle have been known for their superb beef quality - derived from evolutionary genetic adaptation in a challenging environment without human intervention. However, despite numerous government and university studies confirming Galloway to have excellent beef and excellent economic and environmental credentials, their recent numbers have remained small.

Slow Food is the international organisation which defends food biodiversity, promotes food and taste education and connects sustainable producers with consumers. By inducting Galloway cattle into the Ark of Taste (its repository of food products with distinctive quality in terms of taste), Slow Food has recognised the inherent qualities of this ancient breed. Of Galloways, Slow Food states “They have a superior grazing ability to prosper on grass, have a very high feed-conversion efficiency to produce succulent meat noted for its marbling.” There are around 1,000 Slow Food members in Australia and over 100,000 worldwide.

Galloways Australia is an Australian breed organisation devoted to the promotion and development of the Galloway and its successor breeds. Galloways Australia protects the pedigree Galloway genetic package by maintaining a closed herdbook, ensuring development of Galloway characteristics can only be powered by the Galloway’s own genetic diversity. Why? – So none of the Galloways superior characteristics are lost.

Galloways Australia is now reaping the fruits of its maintenance of Galloway genetic purity.

Exports are underway to Canada to reinforce the Galloway’s grass finishing ability, to Scotland (the native home of Galloway cattle) to reinforce some depleted characteristics, to New Zealand and to Germany.

Galloway cattle efficiently convert grass on non-arable country into high quality, well-marbled, healthy meat. The meat is low in fat, high in beneficial fatty acids and has an excellent Omega 6:3 ratio. Galloways are a long lived, resilient, easy calving breed. This is an ancient breed fitting the contemporary consumer needs. It is an honour for Galloway cattle to be recognised by Slow Food and inducted into the Slow Food Ark of Taste.
